The characters in this book make decisions that have a profound impact on the lives of people they love. I hope you enjoy discussing your reaction to the characters’ choices and what you may do if you slipped into their shoes.

  1. What do you think ultimately leads to Rae choosing Trey over Matt?
  2. Do you think Rae overreacts to Trey’s indifference at the New Year’s Eve Party?
  3. Why do you think Rae’s father never told her about his relationship with Faye?
  4. When you first heard the story of Matt’s pursuit of Kara did you wonder if he had something to do with her death?
    1. Why do you think the author planted this fear?
  5. Would you ever stay in a secret relationship if you knew it could ruin that person’s relationship with a close family member? Do you think Rae should have told Matt?
  6. Both Rae and Matt felt responsible for the accident. And both had been drinking the night it happened. Why do you think they formed opposite “relationships” to alcohol after that night?
  7. What do you think may have happened to Rae if she hadn’t made the move to Boston?
  8. Both Matt and Rae are forgiving toward the driver when Dani is hit. Do you think they would have had the same reaction had they not survived a similar tragedy? Why or why not?
  9. Do you think Rae’s father blamed himself for Faye relentlessly pursuing prosecution for Rae (as revenge on him for rejecting her more than once)?

The Keeping

Below I have provided 15 Adult or YA questions to help you spark conversation at your book club. If you have any additional questions you think I should add I’d love to hear them at 2tellRochelle@gmail.com.

Adult Questions

  1. Can you name at least three reasons why the author may have chosen to title the book The Keeping?
  2. One of the themes in The Keeping is the special relationship between fathers and daughters. What parallels can you draw between Laura and her father’s relationship and Sierra and Patrick’s relationship?
  3. Did you feel like Laura turned her back on Patrick too quickly? Do you think she should have stood by her husband or do you feel that, given her past, her reaction was forgivable?
  4. Trust is a theme throughout this book. Even in the most loving relationships such as Sierra’s and her father’s or Laura’s and Patrick’s once trust is broken, it is difficult and maybe even impossible to gain back. Do you think you could rise above broken trust for love? If you learned that your father or husband had been keeping a secret from you like Patrick’s could you forgive him?
  5. Did you find yourself hoping Sierra would choose Dave or Gavin and why?
  6. Do you think Mindy suspected Gavin had anything to do with Sierra’s disappearance? Why or why not?
  7. Do you feel like Gavin made the right choice to save May? If not, what do you think he should have done instead? If you do agree with what he did, do you think he should face criminal charges?
  8. Another common theme in the book is addiction. Do you think you could stay married to someone with an addiction? And would it depend on what the addiction was?
  9. If Sierra was your daughter could you stay quiet about what happened or would you go to the police?
  10. What role do you think alcohol played in the events that took place in this book? Do you think it is a realistic portrayal of the role it plays in high schools across the US? Europe? Other parts of the world?
  11. At the end of the book Sierra has to make some hard choices. Do you agree with her decisions? What would you have done different or the same?
  12. If you were May, would you be angry with Sierra? Gavin? Everyone?
  13. Do you think Dave should have tried harder to convince Sierra to marry him? Why or why not?
  14. Do you think the choices a pregnant woman currently has in the United States are important to uphold? Why or why not?
